Although I do a lot of 3D work, I'm still a designer FIRST. I love to start designs on paper, there's just a unique bridge between your design sense and the paper that I find hard to replace when starting digital right away.
Many of the parts in my BMS kit have roots in traditional sketches and 3D draw-overs and this truck is no exception. Military concept vehicles often drown in generic parts without really presenting any character. I've been guilty of this many times.
It can often help to resort to the aid of a visual hook that already has strong associations rooted in culture. In this case, the distinct scale-like look of a classic hand grenade helped me establish the main elements of the cabin. After that, you can throw on all those juicy details you want but at least there's an element to your design that people can remember. Just picture how non-distinct the Macarena would be if the song was only mumbling and no "Hey Macarena!"
In the background, I'm still finishing some technical aspects of this 3D kit but in the meantime, I hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look.
