Shadow Protocol: Resonance Inhibitor - design breakdown

Often, real design progress isn’t made by modeling or kitbashing—it comes from sketching and thinking through the design problem.

Our brain seems more engaged when you can imply associations to certain processes. In this case, the idea of a cylinder lock indicates the device’s function of unlocking the correct Void frequency

A number of 3D blockouts were explored quickly to get an idea of the overall layout and proportions. The lock idea was quickly abandoned. The directional nature of this setup started to encroach too much on existing devices’ territory.

The spherical shape ended up as a good contender to reflect the cosmic makeup of the Void. The particle accelerator–like ring doubles as both a subatomic science reference and a functional mechanical element, rotating internal eccentric mass components.

To help project the incredible forces of this device, a fully actuated tripod serves as its base.

During an internal project at MOOD Visual, I was tasked with a challenging but very enjoyable task: the Resonance Inhibitor.

A key prop for their game concept 'Shadow Protocol,' a tactical co-op horror shooter about containing dimensional threats.

This device helps the player neutralize Void conduits by destabilizing a targeted area on a subatomic level, thus closing the interdimensional gate that allows the Void to manifest in our reality.

The biggest challenge by far was conveying a new, non-existing device with a function that doesn't resemble any military equipment we know. This also meant it could not look like any familiar devices—antennas, radars, optics, etc.

The detail process of the final model was sped up by using parts from my Big Medium Small 3D pack 'ARMOR.'
'ARMOR' is a complete vehicle design 3D kit and was a collaboration between Big Medium Small and me, available now here: https://www.bigmediumsmall.com/armor"
